Responsibilities

Excellent communication skills and the ability to listen and lead are important assets to the team member performing the essential role of Lead Medical Assistant in Workplace Health and Wellness. The Lead Medical Assistant must have the desire to make a positive impact on the lives of patients and have the ability to multi-task, take initiative to complete job duties in a timely manner, and perform routine clinical and administrative tasks to keep the office running efficiently.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Mentors new and existing employees on optimizing workflows, implementing best practice workflows that prioritize efficiency and quality, and ensure the safe delivery of high quality care to patients.
  • Implements and maintains competency assessments for the clinical staff at least annually, and more frequently for new hires.
  • Oversees special projects including components of the drug and alcohol testing program as assigned and acts as a mentor for clinical staff in the department.
  • Prepares the chart prior to the patient visit ensuring all test results, hospital discharge data, consult letters and other relevant information is available to the clinician at the time of the patient appointment.
  • Works closely with the care team to mitigate risk and prioritize patient engagement across the care continuum.
  • Obtains vital signs which include, but are not limited to: temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height and weight.
  • Reconciles medications reported by the patient during the intake process.
  • Performs vision and hearing screenings, urine drug screening, breath alcohol screening, respirator fit testing, pulmonary function testing, and other tests/procedures as assigned.
  • Maintains the Medical Assistant workload in the electronic medical record and other databases utilized by the department.
  • Communicates test results and other information to patients and employers at the request and direction of the clinical provider.
  • Administers injections and performs venipuncture as requested.
  • Processes blood samples and completes lab paperwork as appropriate.
  • Performs point of care testing and CLIA waived quality controls as needed.
  • Screens and redirects telephone calls and walk-in visitors.
  • Schedules patient appointments and assists in scheduling specialty/testing appointments as requested by the clinical provider.
  • Interacts with patients, panel providers, and insurance carriers to obtain and organize work-related injury paperwork, claim information, and work restrictions as needed.
  • Maintains supply, sample medication and pharmaceutical inventories.
  • Independently anticipates data/information/staff support needs and facilitates information collection and dissemination.
  • Completes special projects as assigned.
  • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned which may include, but are not limited to: stocking exam rooms, re-stocking supplies away, collecting laundry and ensuring that all work areas are in order prior to day end.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma/GED, required

Three years or more experience in a medical office or other healthcare facility with demonstrated experience in leading/mentoring teams and/or leading performance improvement initiatives, required.

 

 

Licenses and Certifications:

DOT Urine Drug Screen Collector & Breath Alcohol Technician Certificates, within 1 year of hire, required. Training wil be provided.

CAOHC & NIOSH-approved Spirometry Certifications within 2 years of hire, required.

BLS preferred.

CMA or RMA preferred.
